It is late and the thoughts will not rest. You came here for quiet and instead the mind grew loud, and that is alright. This meditation does not silence the racing by force. It reminds you of something the night does to all of us: in the dark it magnifies everything, turning a small concern into a crisis and a passing thought into a spiral. Nothing has actually grown. Only the dark has made it louder.

Best for: anyone whose thoughts race at night, who battles insomnia and nighttime anxiety, or who lies awake while small worries swell into something enormous in the dark.

Use it when: you wake at 3am and the worries feel impossibly large, you cannot fall back asleep because your mind keeps spinning, a problem that felt manageable by day looms over you at night, or the harder you try to sleep the louder the thoughts become.

How it helps: each slow breath shrinks the worries back to their true size and lets one loud thought after another grow quieter. By the end the spinning has eased, the worries feel far away and small, and you are sinking below the surface where they churn into the still water where rest is waiting.

A roughly ten-minute guided breathing meditation in a calm voice over gentle ambient sound, from The Silent Ember Anxiety collection.
