Something is cresting in you right now. The chest tight, the breath quick, a surge rising as if it might not stop. You are not in danger. This is a wave moving through the body, and waves do one thing above all else. They pass. This meditation helps you ride this one out, breathing while it moves through you, until you feel the crest turn and the surge begin to fall.

Best for: anyone in the grip of panic or rising anxiety, with a racing heart and quick shallow breath, who needs to calm down and feel safe in their own body again.

Use it when: a wave of panic is cresting and feels like it will never end, when overwhelm tightens your chest, when fear spikes and you need to steady your breathing, or when anxiety surges and you want to ride it out instead of fighting it.

How it helps: the long, slow exhale tells the body's alarm it can stand down. You stop fighting the surge, rest a soft attention where it lives, and breathe through the peak until it turns. You learn in your own body that the wave came, peaked, and passed, and that you can stay through it.

A roughly ten-minute guided breathing meditation in a calm voice over gentle ambient sound, from The Silent Ember Anxiety collection.
