There may be a tightness in your chest right now, a heaviness, a band drawn close around your breath. This meditation does not try to make it go away. Instead it teaches you to meet the tightness gently, breathing low and slow into the held place, until your body understands there is no need to brace, and begins to soften on its own.

Best for: anyone feeling chest tightness, a band around the breath, or the physical grip of anxiety and stress, especially when fear of the feeling makes it worse.

Use it when: your chest feels tight and heavy and you cannot fully breathe, anxiety has settled into your body as a clenched, guarding sensation, you are caught in the loop of fearing the fear, or you need slow, reassuring breath to ease the tension.

How it helps: you learn that the tightness is your body bracing, not danger, and meet it with patience instead of alarm. Slow exhales send the message that it is safe to soften, and the band loosens a thread at a time. By the end you carry the quiet reassurance that you know how to give your body calm whenever it asks.

A roughly ten-minute guided breathing meditation in a calm voice over gentle ambient sound, from The Silent Ember Anxiety collection.
