The day asked a great deal of you, and now it is over. All those screens and voices and small urgent things can finally stop reaching you. This meditation gently closes the gate on the day's noise and dims the room of the mind, like lowering a lamp notch by notch, until the sharp thoughts blur and there is nothing left to attend to but the slow rise and fall of your breath.

Best for: anyone whose mind stays switched on at bedtime, who lies awake replaying the day, or who struggles to wind down and fall asleep after too much input and stimulation.

Use it when: you can't switch your mind off at night, when the day's worries keep circling as you try to sleep, when you feel overstimulated and wired at bedtime, or when you wake at 3am and need to settle back down.

How it helps: guided breathing and the image of a dimming lamp slow the racing mind, let the day's thoughts fade toward the walls, and signal that the gate is closed and nothing more needs tending tonight. By the end the room is dark and warm and quiet, and sleep can come on its own.

A roughly ten-minute guided breathing meditation in a calm voice over gentle ambient sound, from The Silent Ember Sleep collection.
